Professional Air Quality Testing for Your Premises
Managing indoor air quality starts with understanding the conditions inside your building. Occupation levels, outdoor pollution, building materials and air handling unit performance, can all influence the air in the spaces people use.
At VW Compliance, we work with building owners, facilities managers and businesses to investigate air quality concerns through an assessment tailored to their requirements.
Whether you need a one-off investigation or support alongside planned ventilation validation works, our indoor air quality service helps you identify what needs attention and the appropriate next steps.

indoor air quality explained
What is Indoor Air Quality?
Indoor air quality describes how pure the air is within a building.
Contaminants that affect the quality include:
Particles: Dust, fibres and other small particles suspended in the air.
Gases and vapours: Substances associated with combustion, cleaning products, furnishings and building materials.
Biological material: Pollen, fungal spores and other airborne material.
Droplets: Small liquid droplets that may carry substances or biological material.
The air inside your premises is influenced by the surrounding environment, activities within the building and the effectiveness of its ventilation.
Indoor Air Quality Testing Services
At VW Compliance we follow two industry-standard ways of testing- these steps must be taken to ensure the quality of the air is not compromised.
Ventilation Hygiene Risk Assessment (VHA)
A VHA includes:
A visual survey of your ductwork system
Deposit thickness tests (DTT) to measure accumulated dust and debris.
Photographic evidence to record findings.
Advanced VHA may include:
Surface sampling: swabs used to collect samples for laboratory analysis of bacterial and fungal contamination.
Preferred vacuum testing (PVT): Dust collected from a defined area inside the ductwork for analysis of deposited dust levels.
Indoor Air Quality Assessment (IAQ)
IAQ Includes:
Temperature and humidity measurements.
Testing for airborne particles.
Air sampling for bacterial or fungal analysis, where appropriate.
Ventilation airflow measurements.
Carbon dioxide monitoring to help assess ventilation.
Targeted testing for gases such as carbon monoxide, where relevant.
Ductwork inspection is a separate assessment and is not automatically included in indoor air quality testing
risk of poor air quality
What are the risks associated with poor air quality?
Airborne pollutants can harm your health, causing irritation, allergic reactions and respiratory problems. Building occupants may experience tiredness, headaches and have difficulty concentrating.
When dust and debris collect inside a ventilation system, moisture from condensation can create conditions that encourage mould and bacteria to grow. This can introduce further contaminants into the air and increase the risks to people using the building.
In hospitals and care homes, these concerns are particularly important because occupants may be more vulnerable to illness.

Why arrange air
Our straightforward, five-step process ensures your ductwork and ventilation systems are thoroughly inspected, professionally cleaned and fully documented, with minimal disruptions to your day-to-day operations.
-
We begin with a detailed inspection of your ductwork and ventilation system to assess its condition and identify any areas that need particular attention. This includes checking contamination levels, airflow performance and any build-up of dust, debris or grease.
-
Before work begins, we prepare the site and implement the appropriate health and safety measures. Our engineers follow recognised industry guidance and site-specific procedures to protect your building, its occupants and your ventilation system throughout the cleaning process.
-
Using specialist equipment, including mechanical brushing, compressed air and powerful vacuum extraction, we remove built-up dust, debris, grease and other contaminants from your ductwork. Where required, approved cleaning products are used to thoroughly decontaminate the system without damaging its components.
-
Once the cleaning is complete, we carry out a final inspection and, where required, perform airflow testing and balancing to verify system performance.
This ensures your ventilation system is clean, operating efficiently and meets the relevant TR19® Air or TR19® Grease specification. -
Following completion, you'll receive a detailed post-clean report, including before-and-after photographs, inspection findings and certification where applicable.
We can also recommend a tailored maintenance programme to help keep your ductwork clean, efficient and compliant all year round.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Most commercial ductwork and HVAC systems should be professionally cleaned every 3 to 5 years. However, high-use environments such as gyms, retail premises and healthcare facilities may require duct cleaning every 1 to 2 years, while commercial kitchen extract systems typically need cleaning every 3 to 12 months, depending on usage.
-
Over time, commercial ductwork collects dust, dirt, debris, allergens and other airborne contaminants that can reduce air quality and restrict airflow. Professional duct cleaning removes this build-up, helping to improve indoor air quality, maintain the efficiency of your ventilation system, reduce fire risks where applicable and extend the lifespan of your HVAC equipment.
-
Key signs your ductwork needs cleaning include, excessive dust around vents, unpleasant odours, a rise in allergy symptoms and visible debris inside the ductwork.
If your building has recently undergone construction or refurbishment, it’s also a good idea to have your ductwork inspected and cleaned. -
TR19® Air is the industry-recognised specification published by the Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) for the inspection, testing and cleaning of ventilation ductwork. It sets out best practice for maintaining clean ventilation systems, helping to improve indoor air quality, support system efficiency and demonstrate compliance with recognised industry standards. The guidance also recommends inspection and cleaning frequencies based on the type of building and how the ventilation system is used.
-
TR19® Air is not a legal requirement, but it is the recognised industry standard for the inspection and cleaning of ventilation systems.
Following the guidance can help organisations meet their responsibilities under health and safety and fire safety legislation, support insurance requirements and demonstrate that ventilation systems are being maintained to a recognised standard.
At VW Compliance, we carry out our duct cleaning and ventilation services in line with TR19® Air guidance, helping businesses maintain clean, efficient ventilation systems while supporting compliance with recognised industry best practices.
-
Yes. Following your duct cleaning service, VW Compliance provides post-clean certification to confirm your ventilation system has been cleaned in accordance with recognised industry standards, including TR19® Air where applicable. This documentation provides a clear record of the work completed and can help demonstrate compliance with health and safety responsibilities, support insurance requirements and provide evidence that your ventilation ductwork is being properly maintained.
-
Yes. Building and refurbishment work can leave behind dust, plaster, insulation fibres and other debris that can enter your ventilation system. A professional commercial duct cleaning service helps remove these contaminants, improving indoor air quality and ensuring your HVAC system operates efficiently.
-
Every duct cleaning project is different. The time required will vary depending on the size of your building, the condition of your ductwork and the complexity of your ventilation system. At VW Compliance, we'll provide a clear timescale following our initial assessment and work around your operational requirements wherever possible to minimise disruption.
